Aged-care beds 'on track'

29 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
AUSTRALIA has an ageing population, making aged care an increasingly important issue.

In recent times Leeton has become known for the number and quality of its aged-care facilities.

Work is currently being completed at Assumption Villa to create new apartments, while construction is also coming along at the new Royal Freemasons' Benevolent Institution (RFBI) aged-care facility in Karri Road.

Work commenced in October last year at Assumption Villa to create the apartments.

The project is one of many stages that will be completed over time and will link in some of the facilities already established at the centre.

Stage one will see more than 30 new rooms being built on the block of land north of the current building.

Each new room will have an ensuite, as well as kitchen facilities and private patio.

The work is being completed by Deniliquin-based company Decentralised Demountables.

Southern Cross Care chief executive officer John Ireland said the work was on schedule.

"Everything is going very well," he said.

"There were some delays with electricity on the site, but now that has been sorted everything is again on target.

"The builders will be back on deck this week, with everything looking really great at the moment."

The RFBI facility, Alf Herrmann Lodge, is located next to the Leeton Masonic Village independent living units and will have both high and low care facilities.

The facility also includes a dementia-specific wing and has a 50-bed capacity.

RFBI chief executive officer Alex Shaw was pleased with how the work was progressing.

"Everything is on track," he said.

"At the moment we are attending to some building issues, but other than that everything is coming along."

RFBI operates 20 accredited aged-care facilities throughout NSW and the ACT, with the next closest to Leeton being Goulburn and Canberra.
