A PROPOSAL to close a portion of Maiden Avenue to allow the redevelopment of the Leeton Soldiers Golf Club has been approved by the NSW Department of Lands.
Leeton Shire Council decided at its November meeting it would support the closure and referred the matter to the Department of Lands for the final decision.
The redevelopment proposal will include the construction of a 48-room single storey motel, along with six villa-style units overlooking the golf course, additional clubhouse parking and a new two-storey clubhouse with a manager's residence underneath.
Leeton Shire Council general manager David Laugher was pleased a decision had been made.
"This is another step toward the development of the area significant one," he said.
"The approval for the road closure now provides the opportunity for the Soldiers Club to submit a development application.
"In the interim it is now the responsibility of council to prepare a plan of survey following the Land and Property Management Authority guidelines to enable the transfer to be processed."
At the November meeting all councillors voted in favour of the recommendation to support the road closure.
A revised design for the redevelopment was placed on display last year, with council receiving 317 submissions.
Of those, 22 submissions (6.9 per cent) objected to the road closure with 295 (93.1 per cent) in support.
