COMING up to summer it is important all residents have some sort of fire safety knowledge.
Fifteen Rural Fire Service (RFS) cadets from Yanco Agricultural High School have been training since the beginning of the last school term to become aware of fire safety.
The group trained every Friday with the help of RFS inspector Matthew Ross and RFS volunteers from various brigades from the MIA zone.
During the training the students completed basic activities such as bush fire fighting training, first aid, communication and learned all about the equipment that is loaded in fire trucks.
The cadets also participated in various demonstrations and drills.
Inspector Ross said the group had enjoyed the training.
"The last time we ran something like this was in 2007 and hopefully we can offer the course again next year," he said.
"It was a good opportunity for the students to learn what the RFS is about and learn some of the basic skills they may need one day if faced in a dangerous situation.
"Hopefully these kids will now continue their interest in the RFS and hopefully stick with it and join a brigade."
On Friday the group were put through their paces at Yanco Agricultural High and were also presented with certificated to mark their achievements.
The students had to demonstrate a five-man gas attack and were also blind folded and were required to complete a variety of instructions.
Inspector Ross said the course had many aims.
"We wanted to teach the kids not only about fire fighting, but also communication and leadership skills," he said.
"It was also great of the volunteers who were here every Friday helping us out."
