FUNDRAISING for former Leeton resident Josh Hindmarsh is continuing throughout the community.
Mr Hindmarsh, 21, was involved in a serious accident in Ballina on Australia Day when he dived into a shallow pool and broke his neck.
He has recently been taken off life support and is out of intensive care at the Prince Alexander Hospital in Brisbane.
Mr Hindmarsh is now waiting for a bed to become available to start rehabilitation, with doctors unable to tell if he will walk again until then. As a result of the accident a committee of five Leeton residents was formed to handle fundraising efforts and a St George Bank account opened for residents to donate to.
Family friend and committee member Helen Collins was hopeful the community would continue to support Mr Hindmarsh and his family.
"Fundraising is going well so far and we have a team penning event coming up on March 27," she said.
"Things are happening slowly and we are hoping this event will be well-supported.
"We are hoping to have a number of things happening on the day, including an auction that people are welcome to donate goods for."
Mr Hindmarsh was living in Ballina at the time of his accident and working as a roofing apprentice.
The committee consists of Mrs Collins, Bill Arnold, Gerard Rourke, Craig Willis and Frank Scali.
Mrs Collins said funds in the bank account were slowly building.
"We haven't been wanting to push fundraising efforts because of the SunRice Festival and the ambassador quest," she said.
"Once that is all finished we will be doing more.
"Josh is communicating better now, but if there is any possible way that we can help him we will be doing it."
