CSU honours talented student

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
EVER imagined what it would be like to be both a high school student and a university student?

Leeton High School year 11 student Micheil Smith can.

Micheil is part of Charles Sturt University's (CSU) Gifted and Talented program that is run by the university's faculty of business.

The Gifted and Talented program gives high school students an opportunity to study a university subject.

Micheil is currently studying the subject Introduction to Data Communications through CSU at Wagga and was enjoying being both a high school student and university student.

"I travel across to Wagga once a week and attend classes of a Thursday afternoon and a Friday morning," he said.

"I'm really liking it and it is also a great opportunity and will hopefully open a lot of doors for me in the future.

"It's great to be able to learn new things, but also meet new people as well."

Micheil was presented with a certificate recognising his achievement on Wednesday at an assembly at Leeton High.

The assembly was attended by CSU associate professor John Louis, lecturer from the University's faculty of business Anthony Chan, manager of the division of student administration Roxanne Locke and lecturer Geoff Fellows.

Mr Chan said Micheil was indeed a talented and gifted student.

"Students go through a very strict selection process to be accepted in the program," he said.

"There is no age barrier, but the youngest person we currently have participating in the program is just 14.

"Students really benefit from being part of the program and Micheil is our only candidate this year.

"I also feel it motivates other students in the school to try and become involved in the program."
