WANDERING through a cemetery may not appeal to some, but more than 50 residents turned out on Sunday for the Leeton Family and Local History Society cemetery walk.
The walk was part of Heritage Week, which started last Saturday and runs until April 19.
The free, hour-long walk included biographies of each of the graves visited.
Leeton Family and Local History Society president Wendy Senti was pleased with the how the walk went.
“We had a lot of younger people there this year, which was good to see,” she said.
“I think this year was the best walk we’ve had yet.
“It was good to see so many people interested and wanting to ask questions.”
The walk featured gravesites of some of Leeton’s pioneers, including early shopkeepers and farmers.
The walk was designed to fit in with this year’s heritage festival theme, which is Our Place in Space.
“It’s sometimes hard to fit activities into the theme,” Mrs Senti said.
“However, we always manage and this year it just goes to show how many people really are interested in Leeton’s history.”
Mrs Senti said the society was always collecting photos and doing research into Leeton’s early days.
The group is also looking to update its current cemetery index.
A discussion on housing styles will be held today at Major Dooley Library as a part of the heritage festival.
A water filtration plant tour will also be held on Saturday and the Whitton museum will be hosting a vintage engine start-up all weekend.
