Jaws of Life donated to rescue team

26 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
JAWS to the rescue.

A new set of technology cutters, known as the Jaws of Life, has been purchased by the Leeton Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) thanks to a grant from NRMA.

Weighing about 20 kilograms the cutters are able to cut through the latest in car metals, meaning the VRA can access car wrecks much quicker, allowing the rapid release of victims who may require further medical attention.

Leeton VRA president Gary Thompson said the new equipment would allow the VRA to help save lives.

"We are very thankful for this donation that allowed us to purchase the Jaws of Life," he said.

"Otherwise it would have taken a long time to raise the money so we are very grateful.

"This equipment is very high-tech and will allow us to save more lives when quick access to a car is needed after an accident."

The Jaws of Life were first used in 1963 as a tool to free race car drivers from their vehicles after accidents.

The hydraulic spreader-cutters are quiet, fast and more versatile than other tools and can cut, open and even lift a car.

NRMA Motoring Services country business manager Steven Kimball was pleased the company was able to help the VRA.

"We have a program of supplying the Jaws of Life to organisations such as the VRA," he said.

"It's great to be able to help out and provide a piece of equipment that will be used to hopefully save lives.

"Our focus is always on helping the community and this is just another way we can do that."
