Knit one, purl one knits people together

KNITTING has again brought together two generations.

Recently at the library students involved in the Links to Learning Program were at the library to meet with the library knitting group.

Earlier this year the students met with the group to learn how to knit and have since been knitting their own squares at home.

The Links to Learning Program, which is funded by Narrandera Shire Council through grant funding, works with students in both Leeton and Narrandera to help achieve maximum potential.

Each of the squares knitted by the students was matched by members of the knitting group.

Co-ordinator of the program Natalie Power said the morning was a success.

"The ladies were very impressed with how much knitting the students had done since they last met," she said.

"The girls were a lot more comfortable this time and you could see there was a lot more talking and laughing going on.

"That is one of the main aims of this program, to get the girls out of their comfort zone, but to gain confidence at the same time."

The squares that have been knitted will go towards helping the Wrap with Love charity program.

Ms Power said the students were looking forward to meeting up with the library knitting group again.

"The girls are really keen to teach the ladies how to use their mobile phones," she said.

"It just goes to show we can all learn from each other and teach each other something new.

"This program is all about teaching the girls to have the confidence to speak to a stranger and trying to instil in them values that will help them to gain employment in the future."

The library knitters meet every Thursday at the library at 10.30am.
