LEETON will have its first set of traffic lights installed this year.
Last year Leeton Shire Council was advised by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) that the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Main Road 80, Vance Road and Canal Street at the western edge of town would be completed under the 2009-10 National Blackspot Program.
Council has undertaken a risk assessment with the RTA to assess the proposed design for the traffic light installation and traffic management.
Intersection improvements have been investigated at this location over many years with a view to improve road safety.
Council's director of engineering and technical services Jamie Condie was pleased the project was moving along.
"There is an enormous amount of planning involved with a project of this type and council has been proactive in assisting the RTA to progress with this project," he said.
"Following our discussions last week the RTA still intends to complete the project by the end of June, within this financial year.
"An important part of the project is to assess the current road network in this area and the RTA plans to undertake pavement investigations on the roads at this location within the near future.
"These investigations are vital to see if the road is suitable for the traffic light installation in its current form or whether areas of the road will require reconstruction.
The lights would be the first set to be installed in Leeton, with the aim of addressing crash history at the location.
Mr Condie said everything was on track for the work to be completed by the middle of the year.
"Once these investigations are complete, the RTA will be able to determine the extent of the work required in this area," he said.
"Council will endeavour to keep the community informed as to the status of this important project as information is received from the RTA.
"Delays and road closures will be notified in advance and kept to a minimum."
