LEETON'S cystic fibrosis (CF) campaigners took off to Tamworth over the weekend to compete in their tenth Great Escape car rally.
The annual rally will take the troupes across 3800 kilometres of Australia to raise money for CF awareness.
Leeton ladies Colleen Willis and Debbie Beer in the Thirsty Camel XF will rally against their husbands Craig Willis and Robert Beer, along with Wayne Bourke, in the Pink HT Holden station wagon.
They will be joined by Roz Thompson and Jeanette Dempsey's Crew Tutu on their race from Tamworth to Port Douglas via some iconic Australian towns.
The two teams, along with Lynne Hawke and Peter Sieders in the back-up vehicle, have raised more than $120,000 dollars for CF in the 10 years they have been competing in the rally, which Mrs Willis said was all thanks to the community.
"We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our cause and encourage you to get involved by following us on Facebook or the Great Escape website," Mrs Willis said.
"The funds that we raise go towards running the National Data Registry, which is the research behind finding a cure for this disease."
CF affects one in 25 Australians and currently there is no cure.
However, specialised medical care, aggressive drug treatments and therapies mean CF sufferers can expect to live well into their 30s.
