GOING back to school means getting back into routine, but also becoming familiar with school zones again.
The majority of school zones operate from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on gazetted school days.
Motorists are required to drive at no more than 40 kilometres an hour through school zones, with these zones identified by red/orange school zone signs, which indicate non-standard signs.
Leeton Shire Council road safety and traffic officer Sandra Robinson reminded residents school zones are now applicable.
"Each new school year we monitor driver behaviour," she said.
"We want to remind all residents that school zones have again been activated and to be mindful of this when dropping the kids off or driving near schools.
"We want everyone to be familiar with the school zone hours again."
Fine and demerit point offences in school zones include speeding, approaching a children's crossing too quickly to stop safely, double parking, stopping on or near a children's crossing and using a hand-held phone while driving.
Triangular road markings or "dragon's teeth" will be painted at the start of each school zone in NSW over the next two years to further increase visibility of school zones for motorists and provide a reinforcement to slow down.
Mrs Robinson said police would be conducting a blitz at school zones throughout Leeton in the coming weeks.
"Once everyone becomes familiar with the school zones again a police blitz will take place," she said.
"We want to make sure all children are safe and that residents are driving safely in these school zones.
"The blitz always takes place about two weeks after school goes back."
