JULY will be all about Aboriginal culture and heritage at the library to tie in with the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week.
This year NAIDOC Week will run from July 5 to 12, with the theme for storytime at the library in July being "The Rainbow Serpent" in conjunction with the Leeton and District Local Aboriginal Council.
The theme for NAIDOC Week will be "Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth" with various activities planned.
The format of storytime will be normal as usual and will begin with the storytime theme song, "If you're happy and you know it".
The story The Rainbow Serpent will be read by a visiting representative of the Aboriginal community and will be followed by another song and the use of puppets to act out the story Tiddalick the frog who caused a flood.
Librarian Sandra Watson was pleased members of the Aboriginal community would be involved in storytime.
"We believe that by inviting an Aboriginal community representative to read at our storytime we are embracing this theme," she said.
The craft activity will involve all children making a decorated segment of the Rainbow Serpent, which will then be joined together and attached to the high wall in the atrium of the library as a celebration and reminder to the community of NAIDOC Week.
Acting chief executive officer of the Leeton and District Local Aboriginal Council Karen Davy said the council was pleased to be a part of the library celebrations.
"If we can showcase Aboriginal culture in this positive and affirming way it enhances a better understanding of our culture while building respect for cultural diversity," she said.
Storytime will be held tomorrow at 10.30am and Thursday at 10.30am and 6pm.
The library invites all pre-school students and their parents and carer to attend any of the free sessions.
