New centre will be envied

THE Leeton Soldiers Golf Club redevelopment could be something that is envied by nearby centres if it were to go ahead.

A revised plan regarding the proposed development between the Leeton Soldiers Golf Club and a private investor was on public display until last Friday, after the Leeton Soldiers Club agreed to discuss the matter further with Leeton Shire Council in an attempt to alleviate objections received during the original application to close part of Maiden Avenue.

Most objectors don't oppose the development, but the closure of the road.

Griffith City Council economic development manager Stephen Joyce said the development in Leeton would be something envied by most centres.

"I've been to many similar developments along the Murray River and if this were to happen in Leeton it would be a great coup for the town," he said.

"Many people see playing golf as a great leisure activity and a great stress relief, but I also have no doubt that it will bring more people to Leeton.

"Leeton is known for having some great tournaments and I'm certain if the development were to go ahead then yes, it would be something envied by Griffith and other centres in the Riverina."

The revised plan was on display the library for 28 days and Leeton Shire Council will now be going through the submissions before reporting back to council.

The new development plan shows where a 48-room single storey motel may be built, along with six villas, additional clubhouse parking and a new two-storey clubhouse with a manager's residence underneath.

The Irrigator is currently running a survey in each addition of the paper until November 10 to gauge the thoughts of the public.

However, the surveys will not make up a formal submission to council.

Mr Joyce said the development had potential for benefits for the entire region.

"I could see numerous package deals being made up to maximise the development to the wider spectrum," he said.

"You could certainly stay at the villas in Leeton and play there, but also perhaps play a round in Narrandera and Griffith and then come back to Leeton.

"I think this would be a great opportunity to set Leeton aside."
