Police station 'not acceptable'

30 Oct, 2009 03:00 AM
THE Leeton Police Station has come into the spotlight this week.

Member for Murrumbidgee Adrian Piccoli this week placed questions on notice with the NSW Minister for Police Michael Daley regarding redevelopment work planned for the station.

The questions included whether there were any plans to redevelop or renovate the Leeton Police Station, whether the station was on the government's priority list for funding and when any such work would commence and what the scope of the work would be.

Mr Piccoli said it was disappointing for police and the wider community that the only redevelopment worked planned for the station in the next four years was the upgrade of the prisoner handling cell.

"I'm concerned that more is not not being done to support the work of the officers using the Leeton Police Station and to provide for improved facilities in a growing community," he said.

The only response Mr Piccoli received from the minister was the upgrade of the prisoner handling cell was part of a four-year program commencing in 2009-10.

Mr Piccoli also listed the station's lack of wheelchair or ramp access at the front or rear of the building, no public toilet facilities for victims, visitors and witnesses to use, inadequate heating and cooling, female locker and change rooms, confidential interview rooms for victims, painting and general maintenance and overall lack of space and room for safe and efficient working practices as other areas that needed addressing.

"For female officers to use whichever office is empty to change is simply not acceptable in 2009 or at any time and there are access and equity issues that need addressing due to the lack of an entrance ramp," Mr Piccoli said.

"Generally the NSW Government needs to spend more money on Leeton Police Station to upgrade it and bring it up to a standard suitable for 12 officers, the authorised staffing level for Leeton."

Mr Piccoli has called on the NSW Minister for Police to address these concerns.

- No public toilet facilities for victims, visitors and witnesses to use

- Inadequate heating and cooling
