Pool stays closed

03 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
A RESCISSION motion to reverse the decision of Leeton Shire Council to close the Yanco pool was defeated at Wednesday night's council meeting.

At council's May meeting, councillor Jack Egan put forward the rescission motion in the hope council would re-think its decision to close the facility.

The rescission motion stated the matter needed to be further investigated and discussed before a concrete decision was made.

The motion also included that a council meeting should be held at Yanco to gauge the opinion of the people.

At Wednesday night's meeting councillors Tracey Valenzisi, Peter Woods, Sam Ciccia and Egan voted for the motion, while councillors Bill Arnold, Emerson Doig, George Weston, Greg O'Callaghan voted against.

Leeton Shire mayor Paul Maytom had the deciding vote and also chose to vote against the motion saying he had put a lot of hard thought into the issue.

"Before tonight I haven't had to form an opinion publicly," he said.

"I come from a small community and I know what it is like to grow up in a community such as Yanco.

"The word Leeton shouldn't be stressed, this is the Leeton shire and what is good for everyone. We aren't pitting Leeton against Yanco, we are simply trying to provide the best possible outcome for everyone."

Cr Maytom also said there was still an opportunity for Cr Egan to put forward a case regarding the pool in the future.

At council's April meeting it was originally decided to close the pool, following an options paper regarding the shire's pools being placed on public exhibition earlier this year.

Following the 28 days of public exhibition two meetings were held in Leeton and Yanco.

The general consensus from the Leeton meeting was to close the Yanco swimming facility and construct a heated pool in Leeton.

Those at the Yanco meeting suggested closing the existing pool and moving it to a different site, with the tennis courts across from Yanco Public School proposed as a new location.

Cr Egan was disappointed with the result.

"At the end of the day all Yanco was trying to do was better its facility," he said.

"If you do the facts, percentage wise, the Yanco pool gets used more than the Leeton one.

"I fail to see the benefit of shutting it down and I'm frustrated with the way we have handled the whole situation."
