LEETON may be a Recreational Vehicle (RV) Friendly Town, but the signs will no longer be there to prove it.
The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has identified three signs in Main Road 80 that do not fit with current guidelines.
Those three signs are the two RV Friendly signs, which are located at the entrances to town from Narrandera and Griffith and the other is the information signage on the Palm, Acacia and Kurrajong Avenue (Soldiers Club) roundabout.
The information signage does not comply with RTA guidelines.
The RTA raised the issue of the signage with council recently. Leeton Shire Council road and safety traffic officer Sandra Robinson was disappointed the signs would have to be removed.
"Council was under the impression the RV association had had already undergone the approval process prior the roll-out of the signs," she said.
"The RTA informed council this hadn't happened so we will now be removing the signs and looking to see if we will be able to install them somewhere else.
"Hopefully this will result in a happy compromise."
Last year Leeton was declared an RV Friendly Town by the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA).
In order to qualify for the scheme Leeton had to successfully meet the needs of mobile travellers and satisfy stringent criteria, including access to medical facilities, a pharmacy, a dump point, a general shopping area, provision of appropriate parking, a vehicle service centre and a visitor information centre.
CMCA also considered the general attitude of Leeton Shire Council and the community so as to identify the friendliest areas in Australia.
Mrs Robinson said council would be adhering with the decision of the RTA.
"It's unfortunate, but if the signs don't fit within the guidelines we don't have a choice," she said.
"Hopefully we will be able to put them somewhere else because they were there to promote our town."
The RTA has requested the signs on the Soldiers Club roundabout and the RV signs be removed as soon as possible.
