Students given TAFE careers insight

03 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
IMAGINE being able to test out a possible career choice before actually deciding on one.

NSW Riverina Institute of TAFE Leeton Narrandera Campus recently held two Taste of TAFE days that were attended by year 10 students from Leeton HIgh School, Yanco Agricultural High School and Narrandera High School.

The aim of the days was to provide students with the opportunity to get to know first-hand some of the courses that are offered as TVET training subjects.

Two sessions were held each day, with workshops being offered in Aboriginal cultural arts, aged care work, business services/human resources, children's services, computer aided drafting, desktop publishing, electrical, fitting and machining, hairdressing, primary industries and retail.

When students are choosing their subjects for years 11 and 12 they have the option of choosing a subject at TAFE that will count as two units within the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

TAFE liaison officer Josie Marks said the Taste of TAFE days were a good opportunity for students to figure out if they wanted to participate in a TVET course.

"It's all about learning about the course to see if the student is interested," she said.

"It also gives them a good idea of the facilities we provide and to become more familiar with them.

"Hopefully the students have found the workshops to be very beneficial."

This year there are about 58 students from Leeton High, five from St Francis College, five from Yanco Agricultural High and about 45 from Narrandera High undertaking a TVET course at NSW Riverina Institute of TAFE Leeton Narrandera Campus.

NSW Riverina Institute of TAFE also offers holiday block courses for subjects such as aeroskills, animal care, aviation and plumbing.

Mrs Marks said students should study all of their options before choosing their subjects for years 11 and 12.

"These are very important decisions and that we is why we run days such as Taste of TAFE," she said.

"It's important we give the students all of the options before they have to choose the subjects that could ultimately lead them to their future careers."
