ST FRANCIS College history students went back in time this week, handling ancient artefacts and playing out scenes from a Roman slave auction.
A two-day visit from Macquarie University Ancient Culture Museum staff was a rare chance to experience history first-hand.
Education officer at the museum Philippa Medcalf allowed the students to handle ancient objects from biblical region Canaan, Egypt, Greece and Rome brought to Leeton from the museum.
Students wore cotton gloves as they passed around the objects and took guesses on their uses.
History teacher Shane Fuller said it was an eye-opener for students who may not have realised 4000-year old tools existed.
“It’s exposing them to history first-hand and exposing them to authentic artefacts,” he said.
“It also may inspire kids in later years to pick up ancient history as an elective.”
Year 7, 8 and senior students took part in the sessions, which rotated between three rooms.
