THE Great Escape Car Rally may be over for another year, but the memories of the trip are bound to live on for a long time.
The two Leeton teams that participated in the rally this year consisted of Roz Thompson, Colleen and Craig Willis and Robert and Debbie Beer.
The team of Ms Thompson and Mrs Willis finished fifth overall, while Mr Willis and Mr Beer placed third.
Ms Thompson said the rally, which raises money for cystic fibrosis, had again been very worthwhile.
"The last time I spoke with organisers the amount of money raised was close to $400,000, which is a record and much more than we were expecting to raise," she said.
"Both of our Leeton teams also won awards throughout the rally, including seventh highest fundraiser.
"It was again a great trip that covered close to 5000 kilometres."
This year the rally began in Wagga on October 12 and continued on through Hillston, Tilpa, Tibooburra, Durham Downs, Thargomindah, Noorama, Camp Cypress and Jaspers Peak before finishing in Port Macquarie on October 22.
The main course of the rally each day takes in mainly gravel roads, but the Road Boss will often throw in a challenge for the thrill-seeking drivers.
However, there is always an alternate route to get around the beaten tracks.
All vehicles entered in the rally must be at least 20 years old, non-4WD, roadworthy, legally road registered and must have all of the compulsory equipment on board.
Ms Thompson said one of the highlights of the trip was the festivities in Noorama.
"We are already looking forward to next year's rally, which starts in Echuca so it will be quite different to the dust and hot weather we encountered this year," she said.
"Organisers have said this year was the best yet and I think another highlight would have been just meeting up with everyone again.
"It's like a family get together every year and we even call ourselves 'rallytives'."
