THE 2009 Leeton Showgirl competition was officially launched at a cocktail evening last Friday night.
This year Alice Houghton, Rebecca Slattery, Jenna Stott, Melina Mandaglio, Ami Broso and Gemma Hehir will all be taking part in the competition.
Each year the Showgirl competition aims to find an ambitious young woman to represent Leeton at a zone final of the competition, which will be held in Leeton next year.
The winner of the zone final will then go on to compete at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Contestants are judged on personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech.
Four of the entrants have backgrounds in irrigation farming.
Showgirl co-ordinator Jessica Norton said the opening cocktail evening was a success.
"The 2009 Leeton Showgirl competition was officially opened by Leeton Show Society president Bill Aylett and the girls were each presented with a flower," she said.
"They then had a short interview, with the questions mainly focusing on the girls telling the guests and judges about themselves and where they see themselves going.
"I thought they each spoke really well and I would hate to be a judge this year. It's going to be tough."
There are three judges this year, two from Griffith and one from Ariah Park.
Last year, six girls took part in the competition, with Elise Hourn chosen as the winner.
The Leeton Show will be held on October 9 and 10.
