WHAT YOU THINK - Survey response shows support for redevelopment

17 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
THE people of Leeton appear to be overwhelmingly in support of the redevelopment of the Leeton Soldiers Golf Club, if the feedback from The Irrigator's survey on the issue is any indication.

While the response of about 150 surveys is only indicative of the population, one thing rang through loud and clear from those that did respond - the redevelopment should go ahead.

The survey was carried out by The Irrigator in response to the many opinions being raised about the proposed redevelopment of the golf club and the closure of Maiden Avenue to allow everyone who wanted to, to have their say.

The proposed redevelopment includes a 48-room single-storey motel, six villas, additional clubhouse parking and a new two-storey clubhouse.

However, current designs require closure of the northern end of Maiden Avenue with the land reclaimed as part of the development.

There were officially 148 survey responses returned to The Irrigator, with late entries pushing the total over 150.

The majority of surveys were in support of the redevelopment and road closure, with those in support of the redevelopment but against the road closure a distant second. Those against the development formed a minority of responses.

Of the surveys returned, 94.6 per cent were in favour of the development with 84.5 per cent in favour of closing the road for the development.

While 10 per cent of respondents live in Maiden Avenue, 93 per cent of them support the development and 73 per cent agree with the road closure.

As there have been concerns raised on both sides of the debate on Leeton Shire Council's role, questions were included in the survey asking whether people thought council has handled the issue appropriately and whether there was anything further council could do.

There were 122 responses to the question about council's handling of the redevelopment proposal and 51.6 per cent felt it was doing an appropriate job. There were 113 responses as to whether council could do more for the redevelopment, with 79.6 per cent believing our local government representatives could pick up their game.

The majority of survey responses came from residents with Leeton Soldiers Club and golf club memberships (69.6 per cent), with most (95 per cent) supporting the development and the road closure (91 per cent).

Even those respondents who are not club members were in favour of the development (93.3 per cent), but less inclined to push for the road closure (75.5 per cent).
