Yanco pool push - Community group approaches council

20 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Yanco community has not given up hope of a swimming pool for its town.

A community action group that was formed recently by residents has gathered many facts and figures regarding what would be required to build a new pool for the town.

The former tennis courts across from Leeton Public School have been listed as a possible site for the pool.

The issue of a swimming facility was again before Leeton Shire Council at its October meeting held last Wednesday.

Member of the community action group Peter Slattery said there had been many misconceptions about what the people of Yanco wanted.

"Ideally all we would like is a pool of some sort in Yanco," he said.

"We understand that there is a long way to go with this, but we are willing to work hard and do all we can to ensure this happens.

"We are here at the meeting tonight to seek further direction from council and whether they would be willing to revisit their decision to allow public swimming to happen in Yanco again."

An options paper concerning the future of public swimming in Leeton Shire was presented to council's January meeting and was placed on public exhibition.

After two public meetings were held in Leeton and Yanco during March, council decided at its April meeting to close the Yanco pool facility.

Following the decision, councillor Jack Egan put forward a rescission motion at the May meeting, but the motion was defeated on July 1.

Decommissioning work at the current pool commenced recently.

Leeton Shire Council mayor Paul Maytom encouraged the group to keep working towards their goal.

"Even if the group is looking for a commitment from council there are a number of things that need to happen first," he said.

"It's a long process, but we can't stop you as a group and if you have more facts and figures gathered before the next meeting you are welcome to present them to us."
