THE Phantoms made the most of their first finals appearance in a few seasons by defeating Yanco All-Servicemen's Club at the Leeton High School ovals on Saturday in the minor semi-final.
The sides met last weekend in the final round of home and away games and the Phantoms were able to reverse the result and win when it counted on Saturday, ending the Cougars' season with a five-wicket victory.
YASC batted first and ran into trouble only two balls into the game when Graham Briggs was bowled by Richard Keith for a golden duck.
Keith continued to decimate the top torder, having Steve Stockton (1) and Chris Killen (0) caught by Simon Wallace in his next over.
The Cougars could see their season slipping away at 3-7 and it went from bad to worse when Paul Werner struck in the eighth over, catching out opener Matt O'Connell (13) off his own bowling. With the next delivery, Simon Watt ran out Tom Richey (1) to bring YASC to 5-19.
Keith then bagged his fourth wicket of the game and finished with an impressive 4-13 from seven overs. Werner also broke through again and finished with 2-12.
The score was made more respectable by Rod Emerson (17no) and Dylan Holt (15), with the pair putting on 29 runs for the ninth wicket and getting the Cougars to 68 before being bowled out in the 29th over for 71.
The low target proved to be difficult for the Phantoms early in the chase, losing wickets quickly before settling and taking the win.
John Gray (1) was bowled by Briggs and the in-form Manoj Beri was caught by Steve Stockon off Brenton George for the same score in the next over. Briggs was on a hat-trick in the sixth over when Stockton caught out Ryan Thurgood (1) and Alan Barton (0) off his bowling to bring the Phantoms to a troubling 4-5.
Opener Simon Wallace (12) partnered with Keith (21no) and duo batted patiently to get the Phantoms to 27 when Wallace fell to Killen in the 23rd over.
John Hill joined Keith at the crease and picked up the run rate, scoring an unbeaten 29 off 35 balls and blasting two sixes in two balls to end the chase. The Phantoms surpassed the total in the 32nd over with five wickets to spare.
