Leeton shield side earnes home final

05 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE Leeton Milliken Shield side won its way to a home final by defeating the Griffith Red side by 41 runs in Griffith last Sunday.

In a rain shortened match, the Leeton side batted first and managed a healthy total of 9-145 from its 35 overs. The Griffith opening bowlers kept things tight and Leeton was 2-13 in the fourth over when Mitchell Hardie joined Corey Graham at the crease for what was to be a stylish partnership.

The pair put on 118 for the third wicket before Mitchell retired on 35. Corey retired soon after for 37 after another fine opener's knock, once again showing good concentration to bat for 24 overs.

Lochlan Cheney added 20 in even time before being dismissed trying to put one out of the park. Mitchell was able to return late in the innings and add to his total to finish with 45 not out thanks to some well-timed hitting.

Cameron McWhirter was the best of the Griffith bowlers with 4-4 off four overs.

Griffith's innings started poorly with Mitchell again in the action, taking three wickets in the first four overs to have the Reds at 3-17. Matt Perruzi (10) and Michael Cimador (10) steadied the ship for Griffith before Todd Pattison (2-9) removed both batsmen in the space of two overs to leave Griffith floundering at 5-47 at the 16-over mark.

From this point forward, Griffith put up the shutters and was playing for percentage in an effort to make this Sunday's final. Through Josh Foley (17no), the Reds managed to hang on to be 6-104 after 35 overs, doing just enough to keep their Griffith counterparts, Griffith Blue, out of the final by a mere 0.0525 in the percentages.

Jayden Lehman also bowled well to finish with 1-5.

The win left Leeton undefeated, two games clear at the top of the ladder on 42 points, with Griffith Red and Griffith Blue both on 30 points at the completion of the home and away games.

Leeton was beaten by Griffith Red in the final last year and will be trying to reverse this result at Mark Taylor Oval this Sunday.

MITCHELL Hardie batted well for Leeton last Sunday in the Milliken Shield game against Griffith Red and will be keen for a repeat performance this Sunday in the grand final.
