THE Milliken Shield competition for primary school cricketers resumed at the weekend with Leeton taking on Hay at Murrumbidgee College.
The Leeton side comprised of many new juniors, compared to the more experienced Hay side, but managed a 47-run victory.
Leeton won the toss and elected to bat and was reeling at 6-28 at one stage before Mitchell Hardy and Pat Tavella come together for a 39-run seventh-wicket partnership.
Mitchell escaped an early chance to finish with 41, including two big sixes. Pat, a newcomer to the side, supported well, compiling a patient 26.
Leeton managed to have 98 runs on the board when it was bowled out in the 32nd over.
Hay's opening pair looked comfortable until Luke Rimmer put one through John Neil with the score at seven. It was not long before his opening partner was also in the pavilion to have the visitors 2-7 in the fourth over.
Jonte Schmetzer commenced his Milliken Shield career with the scalp of the dangerous Hay captain Angus Campbell.
Finding the edge with his first ball to have Angus caught behind by Lochlan Cheney for 10.
This started a fine day for both Lochlan and Jonte.
Jonte finished his spell with 3-3 off four tidy overs.
Pat again starred, this time with the ball, cleaning up the tail with three wickets, two of which were stumped by Lochlan.
Hay capitulated to be all-out for just 51 from only 24 overs. Lochlan finished with three stumpings, two catches and a run out.
This result was due to the Leeton side taking all its chances and bowling and fielding well.
Leeton will take on Narrandera at Narrandera in the next match on November 29.
