State cricket quarter-final - LPS meets Bathurst today

20 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
IN WHAT is already a huge achievement, Leeton Public School has made the quarter-finals of the NSW-PSSA state cricket knockout and will host Bathurst today at the Leeton High School ovals.

LPS reached the top 16, with a 60-run win over Hanwood PS and then became the Riverina champion by defeating Wagga PS last Friday by 19 runs at Wagga.

School principal and coach David Lees was thrilled with the team's efforts.

"The school community is extremely proud of this group of outstanding young men," he said.

"As coach it has been a pleasure to witness their skill, efforts and sportsmanship throughout the competition to date.

"To be the Riverina champions and state quarter-finalists is a huge achievement and one they should be very excited about."

Making it to the Riverina final this year was LPS's best result in the competition, but the team of talented youngsters went one better to make the top eight with the Wagga win.

Lees said today's match, which starts at 9.30am, should be great display of schoolboy cricket.

"To reach this level, Bathurst PS is obviously an excellent side and it promises to be a tightly contested match," he said.

"Hopefully home-ground advantage and forecast hot weather may work to our advantage, but we will need to play our very best cricket to be a chance of progressing through to the final stage."

Against Wagga, Leeton batted strongly to post a total of 151.

The innings was led by Mitch Hardie (40ret), Lochlan Cheney (30), Bailey Wallace (21), Lucas Meline (17) and Tom McMullen (12).

Bailey had an outstanding game in the field with three catches and Tom also had safe hands with one catch.

Luke Rimmer dominated with the ball, taking 5-26 from five overs. Mitch (1-12), Lochlan (1-33) and Dylan Pietsch (1-21) also troubled the Wagga batsmen.

The match had spectators on the edge of their seats, but in the end the LPS boys proved too strong and dismissed Wagga for 132.
