THE Cougars and the Phantoms played out a thrilling preview of next weekend's B grade minor semi-final on Saturday.
The sides are set to meet in what should be a tight elimination final after Yanco All-Servicemen's Club escaped with a two-run win at Murrumbidgee College.
Batting first, YASC lasted its 35 overs to post 9-150, scoring at 4.3 runs per over. Top-scorer Graham Briggs (35) and Matt O'Connell (19) put on an opening stand of 59 before the Phantoms bowlers dominated to have the Cougars teetering at 9-88.
Despite bowling with a wet ball, Ryan Thurgood took 4-18 from seven overs, including a triple-wicket maiden. He was supported by Daniel Keith (2-25) and Simon Watt (2-13).
Numbers 10 Grant Commins (29no) and 11 Rod Emerson (33no) then stopped the collapse with a partnership of 62 runs from just 42 balls to give the Cougars a defendable total.
In reply, the Phantoms lost wickets early, but opener Simon Wallace (71) proved immovable for most of the innings before falling in the last over.
Manoj Beri (29) was next best with the bat and he put on 46 runs with Wallace. Paul Werner (11) was the only other batsmen to make it into double figures.
Once Wallace fell in the last over, the Phantoms tried hard to find the final runs needed for a win, but finished on 9-148.
For YASC, Brenton George took 3-18 and Dylan Holt took 2-33.
HOTEL'S CLASH WASHED OUT
THE match between Hotel Leeton and Yanco Hotel was washed out after 23 overs on Saturday at the Leeton High School ovals.
Hotel Leeton was 1-101 when the rain became too heavy to continue. Damien Bush (43no) and Martin Maley (43) put on 97 runs for the first wicket.
Maley was bowled by Ken Clack (1-32) in the 20th over and John Speer was zero not out when the match was called off.
COMPROMISE ON OVERS
THE Colts and Narrandera's match at the high school ovals on Saturday was also a wash out.
Due to the inclement weather, both teams decided to play 10 less overs each, giving each side 25 overs at the crease.
Narrandera batted first and took advantage of the small boundaries to post 8-190. Matt McLellan (87) hit six fours and three sixes and also finding or clearing the boundary were Jono Doyle (20), Jason Rilen (29) and Willy McHale (22).
Frank Iannelli took two wickets for the Colts, who were playing their last game of the year.
Ten players had a bowl and six of them took a scalp in the dead rubber.
Leeton Soldiers Club was about to start the chase when the weather ended the match.
