Narrandera is ready for clash

09 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE Sydney Swans will face-off with North Melbourne in Friday night's NAB Challenge blockbuster to be played at Narrandera Sportsground.

It will be the third time in four years the Swans have played in Narrandera, following matches against Richmond in 2008 and Collingwood in 2007, while the Kangaroos have not played at the ground before.

Tickets are selling fast for the clash and AFL NSW-ACT is expecting a capacity crowd for the game. Past crowds have been 12,000 and 9000.

Tickets are available in Leeton from the Soldiers Club, excluding grandstand seats, which are available from the Narrandera Ex-Servicemen's club, Wagga Rules Club and the AFL office in Wagga.

Prices are adult $14, child under 14 $2 child under 6 free, participating AFL club member free, AFL member free, concession/pensioner $8, family $28 (two adults, two juniors) and grandstand reserve seat $19.

Narrandera Shire mayor Wesley Hall would like to see the whole Riverina come together to watch top-level AFL in their own backyard.

"I would most definitely encourage all residents in the Riverina to come to Narrandera on Friday and take advantage of the rare opportunity to see the big name AFL players in their own backyard," councillor Hall said.

"To Griffith, Albury and Wagga residents, as well as all the places in between and around, we welcome you all to come take in the action at the picturesque Narrandera Sportsground.

"We are thrilled the Swans are coming back and I encourage locals to get behind them and (the Kangaroos) by decorating their shop fronts, cars or whatever, to show their support.

"The Riverina has plenty of AFL supporters in general and it is great the AFL has brought the game back to the area."

There have been a number of improvements made to the ground since the last pre-season AFL match. With the assistance from the AFL NSW-ACT and the NSW Government, the Narrandera Shire Council has upgraded the stadium's facilities, including a ground irrigation system and new sound system.

Cr Hall said he was pleased with how everything was progressing in the lead up to the match.

"We are happy with how everything is going," he said.

"Improvements have been made to the ground in stages, and we can't wait to show it off to the rest of the Riverina next Friday.

"Narrandera Shire Council general manager Mark Amirtharajah said the aim of pursuing the pre-season game was to give people in rural areas an opportunity to see top-level AFL in their own backyard.

"What the investment enables us to do is to bring forward a whole lot of capital work for the sportsground and that has come to fruition by having another (AFL) game in Narrandera for the third time," he said.

"From an environmental point of view, it's a great initiative because we've put in an irrigation system, with sprinklers and a water catchment tank.

"In the past we used to water the ground manually, which involved a lot of guess work.

"Now, what it has done is help us to put in some drainage and automatic sprinklers that make watering more efficient."
