THE Leeton and District Bowling Club No. 6 pennants side took out the team of the year award at the Sportsperson of the Year presentation night on Saturday.
After cruising through the District and Zone levels, the L and D team travelled to Newcastle to contest the state finals over three days and had an exceptional run to finish third in NSW.
Greg Geltch from the No. 6 side said they were surprised to take out the team of the year gong, considering the high level of talent honoured at the night.
"When you listen to what Jane Houghton or Gabrielle Hurst and all these talented juniors have done, we're not 'sportsmen', but we've got a good team," he said.
The team's Graeme Ahern said they had a good run.
"We won the local one easily and won Zone fairly easy," he said.
"Then we went up to Newcastle and won our first two games, lost our third, but we won our first two games by enough to get through to the semis."
The other nominees were Leeton Soldiers Squash Club, Leeton Junior Phantoms under 13s, Leeton Greens league tag, Yanco-Wamoon under 18s and the Leeton-Whitton Crows A grade, B grade and Junior Blue netball teams.
