FIRST-TIME Sportsperson of the Year committee president Peter Slattery is pleased with the quality of nominees up for junior and senior sportsperson of the year awards tomorrow night.
The presentation night, to be held at the Leeton Soldiers Club, will decide who of the town's many talented athletes will be judged the best for 2009.
Slattery said the range of junior nominations was particularly impressive this year.
"With the juniors, there's 15 kids and they're all very talented across a lot of different sports," he said.
"The nominations are of a high standard. There's kids performing at all different levels."
Slattery has enjoyed his first year in the president's role, but said it has been a lot of hard work.
"It's been challenging," he said. "The biggest thing has been getting club secretaries or whoever to put in some nominations.
"That'd make it a lot easier.
"There are a lot of team nominations, but I can think of a few more teams out there that could've been nominated," said Slattery.
There was no guest speaker at last year's presentation night, with a sports trivia segment held instead.
This year there will be a special guest, with Australian rules football premiership player and former St Francis College student Adam Schneider taking a brief break from St Kilda's pre-season training to be there tomorrow night.
"Adam Schneider is born and raised in Osborne and made it in the big smoke," Slattery said. "It's a story of country boy come good.
"He went to school in Leeton and it should make a good night."
Schneider will be at the club from 6pm to sign autographs.
