Scoullar is man of moment

09 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
FORMER Crows ruckman Paul Scoullar was awarded Senior Sportsperson of the Year for 2009 at the annual awards dinner on Saturday night, while Wests Tigers recruit Hayden Crockett took out the junior honour.

Scoullar won by a good margin of three points, securing a vote from all five judges.

It almost replicated his record 34 votes in the Riverina Football League's first grade best and fairest count, which earned him the August senior prize earlier in the year.

The 203cm big man is now in Deniliquin due to work commitments, but returned for the presentation night just hoping to catch up with the friends he made during his year here.

"To come here tonight was great, but to win it was an honour," Scoullar said.

"I was just really proud to be a part of the town last year.

"I wasn't expecting anything (on Saturday).

"I was coming to catch up with people I hadn't seen for a while and to win was a proud moment."

Scoullar is currently training with a club in Deniliquin, but said he would love to play another season for the Crows and be part of the community again if only he lived closer to Leeton.

Hayden, who took out the Junior Sportsperson of the Year, could not be there on the night as he is in training with the Wests Tigers.

The reigning Group 20 under 18s player of the year was picked up by the NRL club to play in the under 18s SG Ball competition and has signed on for the national under 20s competition.

Leeton Greens president Steve Preston accepted the award on Hayden's behalf and said he was a deserving winner.

"As far as dedication goes, you have to sacrifice a lot of things and Hayden is one kid who is prepared to make those sacrifices," Preston said. "He's always wanted to go to the NRL and it won't be through lack of commitment.

"He was only 17 in the under 18s last year and to go and win the club best and the group best was a great effort. He got a bit of first grade experience as well.

"He's down there now and he's doing all he can. He's a good kid too and a good team player and he leads by example.

"He might lack a little bit of physical size, but he plays above his weight and he makes the sacrifices and the club wishes him all the best.

"Once he's down there and they see what he can do, I think he'll go alright."

For Leeton-Whitton, Scoullar was also awarded the Max Cruise memorial award for most RFL medal count votes, the Max Allen memorial first grade best and fairest and the goalkicking award.

Runner-up in the senior vote count was golfer Viv Burton, who also gained votes from each judge to finish on eight. At one stage the count was a three-horse race between Scoullar, Burton and talented touch player Erin Bandy, who was awarded six votes.

The junior sportsperson count was a close one, with two judges awarding Hayden a maximum three points, edging out Gabrielle Hurst on five points.
