DESPITE the heat, hundreds of players, officials and spectators descended on the town ovals last weekend for the Southern Suns touch championships.
Leeton Touch Association (LTA) won the right to host the event this year, which saw teams from as far as Wollongong vie for places in the Southern Suns representative side for the National Touch League.
LTA secretary/administrator Jackson Goman said the weekend went well, even though team numbers were slightly lower than last year's championships.
"I would call it a success, especially considering the number of teams," he said.
"The LTA basically provided the venue and facilities for the weekend, while the tournament itself is controlled by the Southern Suns Touch Association.
"The helpers in the canteen did an amazing job catering for players, officials and spectators. Many players and officials commented on the excellent conditions of the fields and we thank the Leeton Shire Council for this.
"I personally would have liked to have seen more teams compete over the weekend, but considering the heat and the number of teams, the event itself was a success."
While LTA hosted the event, Leeton had three teams compete. The men's 20s side missed out on its first game as the Griffith 35s pulled out the night before.
The men's 40s and women's open sides each played four games against a range of opponents from bigger associations.
Goman said LTA would like to host the regionals again in the future as it is a great boost to the younger players and the town itself.
"I believe LTA would consider applying to host this event again as it really is something of a spectacle for the community," he said.
"The fact that the majority of the under-14 girls representative team were in attendance on Sunday to watch some of the grand finals is a very positive outcome of hosting the tournament.
"It really is about being able to provide for both current players and future players and allowing our juniors to view a higher level of quality touch football action.
"This will only encourage and teach our juniors to develop their own skills within the game."
