 Webb's state title chance

Webb's state title chance

30 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
TOMORROW night will be the biggest fight of Nathanael Webb's career as he tries to defeat current champion Kieran Walsh for the NSW welterweight title.

Webb will enter the ring as part of the Sinister Intentions 3 kickboxing and Muay Thai event to be held at Bolton Park Stadium in Wagga.

The clash will be one of five titles contested on the night, with the main event seeing former Leeton resident Jagdeep Rana take on Lara Ahola for an Australian title.

Webb has been working hard in preparation for tomorrow's bout, but has recently endured a bad run of injury. However, he said he is now fit and ready to return home as a state champion.

"I've been training pretty hard," he said. "I've had a few things go wrong.

"At the start, I sprained my AC in my left shoulder and I was out of action for about two weeks and the only thing I could really do was run to keep my fitness up.

"That ended up being good, because I lost the weight I needed to lose early on. I have to be 67kg on the dot or lower for this one - every title fight there's a weight you can't go over.

"Then I got back into proper training and I feel stronger than I ever have before and pretty fit.

"These last two weeks I've had a chest infection, which has sort-of slowed me down as well.

"It's been a bad run, but I'm feeling confident, fit and ready to go."

Walsh hails from the Phoenix Gym in Canberra and Webb said his opponent won't go down easily.

"He is currently the state champion and is defending against me," he said. "He's very good with his hands and his leg kicks, but he's not as good in the clinch though and I think I'll be better than him there.

"He looks pretty fit, too. The last bloke I fought on FOX Sports and lost against is the bloke he has beaten.

"I know it's going to be tough, but I'm confident I can beat him. I know I'm the better fighter technically and I know I'm fitter and stronger.

"I've just got to do it now."

Webb's endurance will also be tested, with the fight set to be five two-minute rounds. His longest bout to date has been four two-minute rounds.

Rana has previously contested an Australian title, but in a lighter weight division than she will fight in tomorrow night.
