LEETON Tri Sports Club is calling on the shire's clubs and businesses to get involved for a good cause and enter the team challenge at the coming Leeton Triathlon.
The annual triathlon is organised by the Rotary Club of Leeton Central with support from the Tri Sports Club and will be held on March 20 with the aim of raising money for the town's emergency services.
Troy Pietsch from Leeton Tri Sports encouraged businesses and clubs enter the team challenge.
"There is a great opportunity for people to get involved by entering a team into the event and compete for the team challenge trophy," he said.
"Leeton Phantoms rugby has entered a team in the event and the challenge has been taken up by a Junior Crows team and speaking to the team manager Geoff Shaw, he has already got the trophy engraved.
"To enter the team challenge all you have to do is organise a swimmer, a rider and a runner. The cost is $45 per team rego on the day.
"I would like to encourage the sporting clubs and business houses to construct a team and compete for the team challenge trophy. The winner gets to place the trophy in their business or club house until the next year's challenge.
"It would be great to get 15 teams to compete on the day."
Pietsch said while bragging rights are on offer, the triathlon is also for a good cause.
"All profits from the event get distributed to the emergency services to help fund training and equipment," he said. "Last year approximately $1500 was raised by the event.
"This year the goal was to double the event numbers and raise $3000 dollars to be distributed between services.
"The Leeton event is shaping up to be a great event for the teams and individuals. The club has spread the word around the region and this would be great to reach the club's goal of doubling competitors and funds to distribute to the charities."
Pietsch said the individual event is looking to be hotly contested this year with a number of the town's athletes laying serious claims on first place.
"With strong performances from Lou Strachan winning at Temora and Ganmain she looks like being the hot favourite to win the individual female sprint," he said.
"With two disappointing places at Temora and Ganmian, Jed Cutter is set to defend his win last year.
"It has been reported that Brenden Houghton and Nathan Woods will be hot on his tail to steal the glory, but with strong performance from Dennis Irvin there could be an upset in the camp. Not forgetting Rob Houghton, who is entertaining and competitive."
Rotary Club of Leeton Central and Leeton Tri Sports Club thanked the event's sponsors. If other businesses would like to make a donation and or supply spot prizes for the day, call Jed Cutter on 0409 317 984.
