I HAVE a mum in Carramar 2 dementia wing.
Upon reading the letters in The Irrigator, I have to respond.
When a parent or family member has to be placed it is a very traumatic time. Not only the reality and guilt but where?
This was my and my family's decision.
Initially Mum had to go to Narrandera as there were no beds in Leeton. This meant that I had to drive to visit Mum as I am sure numerous families have had to do the same.
To city people or the NSW Government, distance does not seem an issue.
Then Mum had a place in Carramar. I was so happy, as this was in my home town.
I had never been to this facility as this had never interested me, like most people in Leeton.
I would never have looked at Carramar and the broader issues surrounding the facility and care, as I am sure a lot of Leeton residents to this day have not.
However it was in Leeton and Mum could reside here.
What can I say about Carramar?
The facility and the staff are the best. I have been involved in and I have seen other family members' care in Sydney, and the facilities and care do not match up to the quality of Carramar.
In Carramar the facilities are first class and to this day still are up to date and the priority is the residents' care.
The facilities are extremely modern and in relation to other facilities I would ask the NSW Government and Leeton councillors, what do the other two facilities that have tendered offer that would improve the residents' care and facilities?
Have we the assurance that the residents will still have their home in Leeton as the tenders are buying beds only?
This sell off by the NSW Government is for money with no consideration for the residents or the long-term consideration of the facility and Leeton hospital.
I ask you all to email or write to the NSW Health Minister and the Leeton Shire Council, attention Paul Maytom.
To the shire council and councillor, why are you not getting involved in keeping Carramar? Why are you not up in arms that you are losing a perfect facility with the great care by the staff?
To mayor Maytom and councillors have one of the contenders been ruled out? Will Wagga be the winner of the contenders? Is this a foregone conclusion? This could be your mum or dad.
To the residents of Leeton you have worked so hard to raise funds to build Carramar.
Yes, we have the new Masonic village that will be opened and the villa is being upgraded, however aged care beds are few and when you are seeking a place for a family member you will need as many options as you can get and Carramar is one of the best options that you will have available.
Talk and write to every councillor that you elected and the council staff. Do not be put off by innuendo that all will be OK as the preferred tender will do the right thing.
Please email or write to state and federal members. It may take a few minutes, but believe me, when it is one of your family members that you are trying to get care for you will then realise how important this is.
