THE community has been encouraged to sit back and relax, while at the same time helping a resident gain a better quality of life.

A theatre party will be held next month to raise funds for a transport vehicle for Dean Walsh, who was critically injured following a car accident just before Christmas in 2012.

Mr Walsh, 28, spent almost 18 months in hospital and at the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit at Liverpool, and only recently returned home.

His condition has slightly improved since being at home, with his mother Jacqui reporting he is aware of his surroundings and seems more relaxed.

However, while it is good news he is home, it does mean he is hundreds, if not thousands, of kilometres away from the treatment and specialists he needs.

With this in mind a series of fund-raisers will be held to raise enough money to buy a vehicle that can transport Mr Walsh to and from medical appointments.

Fiona Stevens works with Mrs Walsh and is in the process of organising the theatre party, as well as a committee that can co-ordinate further events.

"What Dean really needs is this vehicle to get him to and from medical appointments," Mrs Stevens said. "The chair he is in doesn't fit in the maxi taxi here, so we really want to get this fund-raising happening and raise the money as quickly as possible.

"At the moment it's difficult to find a way to even just bring him into town."

The ultimate dream for the Walsh family would be to raise enough funds to purchase a new vehicle that will last longer.

The film to screen at the theatre party will be Jersey Boys, which has received good reviews at the box office. Once enough money has been raised to purchase the vehicle, the Walsh family has said it would be happy to share it with others in need.

"This vehicle would help so much," Mrs Walsh said.

"Not only would it help in getting to medical appointments, but just getting Dean out of the house.

"He's improving and we do have hope there because that's the only way you can be.

"He seems to be relaxing more now and is a bit more aware of things.

"It's just hard because when he was in the hospital whenever he needed an MRI or CT scan or something else he could just be wheeled down the corridor.

"Here we are just so far away from everything."

The theatre party will be held on August 1 at the Roxy Theatre from 7.30pm, with tickets only available at the door for $15 per person, which will include supper after the film.
