Students from kindergarten to year 10, as well as some senior students took part in National Tree Day last Friday, helping to plant 100 lemon-scented gums along Cemetery Road on the outskirts of the town.

The stretch of road was about two kilometres long, with students and staff working together to plant the trees and enjoy the sunshine.

Barellan Central principal Stacie Luppi said while the day had obvious advantages, it also fostered other benefits.

"The students are collaborating and working as teams," she said.

"We've got older students in groups with younger students ... they are all learning from each other.

"They will also go back to their classrooms and discuss what they've done today and how that relates back to the curriculum.

"I think it's really important we take part in days like today."

Planet Ark's National Tree Day occurs on the last weekend of July every year as it is the optimal planting time for the majority of Australians towns.

The school was assisted by Narrandera Shire Council on the day.

Council provided staff and the trees that needed planting, with 60 more red flowering gums to be planted at a later date to avoid frost damage.

"I believe about 20 years ago the Barellan Progress Association planted the trees that are already here along the road, so we thought this would be a good location to have some more," said council's manager of open space and recreation Roger Evans.

"The students have all been really enthusiastic and seem to be enjoying it."
