Council was awarded $158,000 in funding last year by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage to undertake a flood study following on from the 2012 event.
A tender by Engeny Water Management has been approved to assist council with the work, which has now started.
As part of the process, community information sessions will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Leeton, Yanco and Murrami.
Council project manager Sandra Robinson said the idea behind the forums would be to provide residents with details of what the study entails, results to date and an opportunity for input.
"Engeny and council have been working together to gather data for input into the study and we have received almost 300 responses to the flood surveys sent out last month," she said.
"We would like to thank all those residents that have taken the time to provide us with this valuable information.
"The purpose of the information sessions is to provide residents with the information we have so far, to advise them of the process we are following and to give them an opportunity to have feedback.
"It will also provide an opportunity for residents to provide details of their experiences with flooding if they haven't already done so."
The flood study will form the basis for the development of a floodplain management plan to help build community resilience through awareness and preparedness for natural hazard flood events.
It will also enable council to consider flood risks with land use planning and emergency management.
