THE Leeton Soldiers Club squash spring competition has just completed week two and teams are settling in to the new groupings.
Competition was fiercest at the top level where three great five-game matches were played out.
David Sarah and Tony Naimo had finished equal bottom of the last competition in A1, but on Thursday night Sarah defeated number-one contender Rob Hanlon in five (37-34), while Naimo fought off the ever competitive Mark Del Gigante in five (38-36).
Trevor Whitby took current club champion (and shaping to do it again) Jacob Harrison to five with Harrison in front 36-35 on points.
Forehands recorded a clean sweep over Drop Shots on Tuesday night.
Rob Johnston defeated Col Thompson in four, Rod Harrison was too strong for Barry Greatz in three, Erin Draper played good consistent squash to defeat Esther Deeves in five while Miranda Tait easily overcame Simone Bruno's handicap to win in three.
Lobs defeated Boasts by three matches to one. David Cross lost to Ross Vitelli in four, Danny Boardman hit too powerfully and covered too well to take Claire Quinlivan in four, Maanu Alexander had a good win in three over fellow junior Cooper Holmes, while Chris Doolin defeated Matt Boots in three.
Drives and Backhands finished equal on matches with Drives ahead 7-6 on games.
For Drives, Bryan Shepley lost in three to an ever improving Macauley Harrison, while sub Cooper Holmes lost in four to Mark Jennings, but that first game win gave Drives the critical edge for the night.
Zac Hanlon and sub Matt Boots defeated Matt Collins and Trish Fletcher respectively in three to seal victory for Drives.
On Thursday night Serves defeated Volleys by two matches to one.
Sarah defeated Hanlon in five, Greg Horton defeated sub Danny Boardman in three while Matt Piper won one back for Volleys defeating sub Cooper Holmes in three.
Aces defeated Hot Shots by two matches to one, but the result could easily have gone the other way were it not for Naimo just finishing too strongly for Del Gigante.
Brian O'Leary won on a forfeit for Hot Shots while if sub Maanu Alexander had not dropped the game and the match 10-9 in the fourth, grandfather Ian might have been in big trouble in the fifth.
Harrison led Hand Outs to a clean sweep over Smashes with his win in five over Whitby, while David Middleton defeated sub Mark Jennings and sub Jayden Boardman defeated sub Zac Hanlon, both in three.
