Earlier this year it was announced council could be hit with a 100 per cent increase for its street lighting if a bid by Essential Energy to raise its charges was approved by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).
As part of its proposal, the company will increase street lighting service prices to local government by 2.5 per cent.
Should it be approved, council estimates its fees would go from about $80,000 to close to $160,000 per year.
Council director of corporate services Duncan McWhirter said there had been no word on whether or not a decision had been made.
"Council put in a submission regarding the 100 per cent increase and what that means for us and the community," Mr McWhirter said.
"We haven't heard from the (AER) ... we definitely have many concerns about this."
The Essential Energy increases are in line with the CPI and, if approved, the price increases would be in place from July next year.
Mr McWhirter said while a decision hadn't been made, council had been addressing ways to combat the extra cost.
He said council was currently making reasonable savings through the use of alternative solutions, including solar power.
"We've been proactive in what we can do ... we've got the solar panels on the administration building here at council, as well as at Gogeldrie Weir and the library," Mr McWhirter said.
"We'll continue to investigate other possibilities."
