IT WAS a cricketing lesson of the highest order for Leeton on Sunday at Mark Taylor Oval.

Playing in the opening round of the SCG Country Shield competition, Griffith pummelled the hapless Wolves to the tune of 214 runs.

Put in to bat, the visitors took to the home side with gusto from the start.

"They made 300 after being sent in," Leeton captain Steven Weckert said.

"It was a good deck and a good outfield. I thought if we would get anything out of the wicket it would be in the first hour."

Phil Burge (12) and Don Brown (31) were scoring freely until removed by Josh Carn (2-42) and Luke Rimmer (1-53).

With the score on 2-48 and having lost two quick wickets, the Wolves thought they were in with a sniff.

However, this merely brought Connor Matheson (53) and Hayden Pascoe (88) together and the rate of plunder increased as the pair piled on 137 runs.

Nothing the Leeton bowlers did made much difference and the field was spread to stop boundaries.

Matheson was the first to go, caught by Sam Cooper off Jarryd Day (3-54) and another couple of wickets fell quickly as Pascoe continued on his way.

He was brought undone by a Day delivery that kept low and skittled his stumps, but the damage was done.

Logan Matheson (21) and Paul Plummer (22no) joined in the fun at the death to take the score to the rarified air of 300-plus, finishing on 7-306.

The Griffith batsmen provided few chances, but Weckert acknowledged the bowlers were as much to blame.

"We didn't bowl well, we didn't stick to our plans," he said.

"It is early in the season and we were a bit under done. (Saturday's) cricket also took a bit of a toll."

With a mammoth chase in front of them, the Wolves batsmen were never in the hunt, losing wickets with the score on five, six and seven as Corey Graham (0), Weckert (1) and Nathan Carn (7) were quickly back in the sheds.

Jarryd Day made eight and Rohan Rehwinkle (16) was the first batsman to pass double figures before Mark Burns (25) provided a cameo in the middle.

A gutsy David Tiffin (13) held out the Griffith attack and was running out of partners when Plummer took a slow-motion diving one-handed catch at midwicket to dismiss him. When Cooper (2) fell, the disaster was over.

Weckert paid tribute to Tiffin, Rehwinkle and Burns, but knew the blame could be equally shared.

"We didn't value our wicket enough," he said.

"When you are chasing 300 you need blokes to dig in and score a hundred."

Leeton's next representative game is a Creet Cup fixture on November 9.
