Former Leeton Visitor Information Centre manager Anthony Puntoriero has teamed up with telecommunications company BigAir to bring fixed wireless ethernet to the town's businesses.
Mr Puntoriero plans to offer the fast internet access to Leeton shire businesses and the timeline will likely be ahead of when the NBN is due to arrive.
"We're in the process of setting it all up, so it's almost ready to launch," Mr Puntoriero said.
"It's a similar concept to the NBN, but we're focusing on the business community in the region.
"With the NBN we don't know when or if that will ever happen, but in the meantime businesses shouldn't be left behind their 'metro' counterparts."
NBN towers have been installed in outlying areas surrounding Leeton shire, but Leeton Shire Council economic development, tourism and events manager Peter Kennedy was unable to pinpoint when the service would be coming to the township itself.
When the project was announced, the federal government gave itself a timeline of 10 years to roll out the NBN.
Since then council has been pushing for Leeton shire to have the high-speed internet sooner rather than later.
Mr Kennedy said the latest project by Mr Puntoriero was an interesting one. "From my point of view until we have the NBN, our businesses are at a disadvantage," he said.
"If there is an alternative to that and it will arrive earlier, I think that is good news for our businesses.
"We don't want them to be disadvantaged in their markets."
