Travelling light: Tourism report says region is struggling, providers disagree

A NEW report has found tourism accommodation providers are struggling in regional areas, but the sentiment in Leeton is the opposite.
The document - Addressing the poor performance of the Accommodation sector in regional NSW - was undertaken by Tourism Accommodation Australia NSW and found there was a significant decrease in the number of overnight visits.
According to the report, six in 10 visitors to regional NSW were domestic day-trippers, meaning those areas were not maximising on regional visitor expenditure.
In the past, regional Australia made up 61.2 per cent of all tourist visits in 2005-06, which fell to 60 per cent in 2012-13.
Leeton Heritage Motor Inn manager Ame Stewart disagreed with the report, stating the motel was often booked to capacity throughout the week.
"I speak to other motels in town as well and they are usually in the same situation," Mrs Stewart said.
"We are a four-star rated property, so we are obviously doing something right to maintain that.
"Our guests always have positive things to say, it's very rare that we get a negative comment."
Mrs Stewart said city motels had an advantage where they could charge different tariffs that gave them more income to inject into their facilities.
The report also shows regional NSW's share of the state's visitor overnight stays had fallen to 45 per cent in 2012-13 and is predicted to decline to 40.2 per cent by 2022-23.
Overnight visitor expenditure in regional areas has supposedly been decreasing since before the global financial crisis, with the report also stating there was a "lack of perceived reasons to visit regional destinations".
Leeton Shire Council manager of economic development, tourism and events Peter Kennedy also disagreed with many of the points raised in the document.
"I believe there are plenty of visitors to Leeton and we're doing better than most other places," he said.
"Leeton is more of a visitor economy than a tourist destination, so we do regularly have people in our shire.
"I think most motels would be able to attest to that.
"You also need to only look at the postcode survey council conducted about two years ago with businesses where it was found that one in five shoppers were from out of town."
