Helson was announced as this year’s recipient during the official Australia Day ceremony in Leeton.
While he was unable to attend the event, Helson said he was honoured to have been nominated.
In taking the senior sportsperson title, Helson beat out well-known reinsman and trainer Phil Maguire, who was nominated after winning last year’s MIA Breeders Plate.
Helson was nominated for the title after taking out last year’s Leeton Golf Club Championships.
In teeing up the A grade championship, Helson had to overcome some stiff competition from well-known golfer Scott Turner.
For the first time in recent memory the championship had to go to a play-off round where an extra 18 holes were played.
Helson finished two-under the card to claim the championship.
Both golfers play off a zero handicap.
Helson shot a 70, three shots clear of Turner who had a one-over 73.
Those on the course at the time said it was a tight contest throughout, with the difference coming on the 17th hole when Turner played a bad drive.
Helson said it was a match he had enjoyed and was surprised it had netted him the sportsperson of the year honour.
“I had spoken to Tony Reneker about being nominated, but I didn’t think I would win,” Helson said.
“It’s a pretty big honour for me … it’s good.
“I think to be the sportsperson of the year for Leeton is a good achievement.”
While it is time on the golf course that Helson enjoys the most, he also plays a number of other sports, including Australian Rules Football and cricket when he gets the chance.
Helson has been playing golf for about 10 years and said he would continue on with the pursuit.
“I haven’t really thought about it (taking the sport further),” he said.
“I’m busy working, but I guess I’ll just wait and see.”
Normally Helson is able to hit the fairway at least twice a week and he was pleased to see the sport growing in popularity in Leeton.
“There’s definitely more people playing now,” Helson said.
“There’s a fair few people around like with the normal comp and Twilight.”
Helson was congratulated on the sportsperson of the year title by those in attendance at the Australia Day ceremony in Mountford Park.
It is the third time the awards have been included as part of the official awards.
