Girl Guides leader Shelley Campbell moved to town last year and was surprised to find there was no unit in Leeton.
She decided to re-establish the organisation in town, with the first meeting of the year held last Thursday.
Fourteen girls attended between the ages of seven and 14, meaning if the numbers are consistent there could be enough for two groups to be formed.
“If the numbers stay where they are, we might be able to split the group into two different age groups, so the girls will be able to have the best experience possible,” Miss Campbell said.
“They’ll be able to do activities that are closer to their ages instead of all being in the one group together.
“We’re really excited by the response we had and hope the numbers stay consistent or even increase.
“It’s never too late to come along and join up.”
An extension of the Scouting movement, Girl Guides meet on a weekly basis during school term to do games, outdoor activities, craft, cooking, and camping.
Becoming a Guide enables girls to have fun and make new friends, learn about leadership and teamwork, and many other life skills.
“It was great to have so many girls there on Thursday,” Miss Campbell said.
“I had been getting a lot of interest (on social media) from parents, so it was good to see people follow through.”
Those at the first meeting participated in various games and challenges much to their own enjoyment.
“Guides give you so much life experience and skills that you will always have,” Miss Campbell said.
There's also travel opportunities throughout the year.
“Adults can get just as much out of Guides as the girls can, if not more.
“I'm getting more out of Guides now as a leader than when I was a Guide.
“It’s definitely a positive group to be part of and a great after-school activity for those involved.”
Girl Guides in Leeton meet every Thursday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at the Girl Guides Hall in Athel Crescent accessed off Coolibah Street.
