About 8.30pm, emergency services were called to a home on Boundary Road, Narrandera, following reports of a shooting.
Police have been told that four friends were at the property, when a firearm was discharged.
A 24-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
He was taken by paramedics to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and later to Canberra Hospital for emergency surgery.
He is currently in a critical condition.
A 25-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Narrandera police station.
He has been charged with reckless wounding cause grievous bodily harm, handle firearm under the influence of alcohol and not ensure safe keeping of firearm.
The man was refused bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court on Thursday.
A crime scene has been established and investigations into the incident are continuing.
