Wicht competed at the first round at Portland in Victoria last weekend where he placed first in the pro street blown class. 

Wicht raced in his LX Torana Hatchback, which residents might remember secured honours at the Summernats in Canberra in 2013. 

He said the APSA series was a competitive drag-racing scene.

“Overall there were 88 competitors that took part in Portland … it’s a competitive field,” Wicht said. 

“There were nine in my class and in the first round it was double points.”

The next round will be held at Willowbank in Queensland and Wicht hopes to do well. 

“We’ll be racing to secure more points towards the championship,” he said. 

“It’s a very exciting sport … there’s all the adrenanline, but it’s a lot of hard work in the lead up. The acceleration is close to ‘3G’s’ on the body.

“Everything in the car needs to be in tip top shape right down to the final bolt. 

“In the lead up to the start of the series we went to Sydney to test and tune. 

“That’s the closest place to go. 

“You go and have all the data checked because it’s all electronic and through a laptop. 

You can go in and make adjustments.”

Wicht paid tribute to his team for their assistance during the first round, as well as in the lead up. 

“Basically all I do is get in and drive it … they do all of the hard work,” he said. 

Those making up Wicht’s team are Lawrie Bullock, Guy Carpenter,  Aaron Retallick, Ray Passalaque, Bodhi Black, Jamie Thornbry and Damien Black.  

Wicht said it was an expensive sport to be part of, but one he loved. 

“There’s a few guys around the area that are involved in drag racing,” he said. 

“It’s all done in a very safe and competitive way through APSA. 

“It would be good to get something started back up here again. We used to have the days out at Narrandera airport.”
