Leeton shire residents will tomorrow cast their vote in this year’s state election for the first time in the new electorate of Murray.

The candidates contesting the seat are Max Buljubasic (ALP), Adrian Piccoli (Nationals), Dr Atul Misra (independent), Helen Dalton (independent), Brian Mills (independent), Garry Codemo (NLT), Jordanna Glassman (Greens), David Elder (CDP).

Each have their own take on different issues and many believe the Murray-Darling Basin Plan is one of the biggest issues facing the electorate.

“Timely access to our water resources is one of the biggest issues in the basin,” Mrs Dalton said. “Agriculture underpins our economy and together with numerous value adds and service industries it supports.”

However, Mr Piccoli believes health is the biggest concern facing the electorate.

“Of the many issues, including jobs and water, health remains the biggest issue in this electorate and indeed state-wide,” he said.

All of the candidates have made big promises should they be successful tomorrow.

Mr Mills said he would open the Lower Lakes barrages and return them to the estuarine state. He said he would also continue the current plan to bring in a level playing field for Valencia orange growers.

There will be eight polling booths open across the shire on Saturday at Madonna Place, Leeton Public School, Gralee School, Parkview Public School, Whitton Public School, Wamoon Public School and halls at Yanco and Murrami.

Dr Misra said he was standing because he felt more could be done for the community.

He said he felt there were many issues that needed addressing.

“I am also against privatization of the energy sector,” he said.

“In relation to the infrastructure, I shall fight for disparity in funding between metropolis and regional areas.”

For Mr Buljubasic it is about ensuring the needs of the people are heard and considered.

“The people in the electorate of Murray deserve strong political representation, representation we haven’t seen in this region for many decades under Nationals MPs,” he said.

Polling places are open from 8am to 6pm.
