The appeal is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary and Leeton shire residents have been invited to help mark the occasion.
Community members are needed to help with this year’s door knock, with organisers hoping to make it one of the biggest yet.
The appeal in Leeton will be held on May 31, according to Captain Jennifer Stringer.
“The appeal is such a great fund-raiser for the Salvation Army,” Captain Stringer said.
“This year we will again be calling for volunteers to lend a hand.
“We usually have great support from the high schools and community organisations.
“Being as its the 50th anniversary we want to make sure we raise as much money as we can.”
The Leeton Salvation Army is this year celebrating its 100 years of operation in town, meaning it is highly likely the town has participated in the Red Shield Appeal since its inception.
Funds raised from the collection are used across the country to assist the Salvation Army with its important work.
“The Salvos help one million Australians in need every year,” Captain Stringer said.
“That is one person every 31 seconds, The need is growing.
“The Salvos believe many more people will be in need of basic assistance with a range of issues.
“This year the Salvation Army’s services are under more pressure than ever and the need for funds is absolutely critical.”
Captain Stringer was hopeful a big volunteer presence would mean more donations in the shire.
“Even if people just want to do a certain area, that is always helpful,” she said.
“What would be good is if we had people from properties outside of town wanting to collect just from their neighbours.
“All of that really helps us out and it means we’re raising as much money as we can.
“Of course we understand that times are tough for everyone.
“That’s why we ask people just give what they can.”
