Manuel Donebus from Leeton Palms Pty Ltd, the company that owns the Market Plaza, has confirmed ALDI will set up shop in the building later this year.
“We have confirmed it … we’ll be doing some reconfiguration work to the shop, so it probably won’t be opened until October or November,” Mr Donebus said.
“We have had long discussions with them, so we are really pleased this has come about.
“This will be part of an overall push to have more shops filled down there.
“We’re already in discussions with other people.
“Having ALDI there means you can attract other businesses.
“We’re also planning an overall ‘makeover’ as such of the plaza.
“It’s great to have some positive news.”
In the past the Leeton Market Plaza has been home to other supermarket chains – Franklins and Foodworks – but both were forced to close after small patronage numbers.
ALDI offers groceries, general items and more at reasonable prices, with customers able to buy in bulk.
Mr Donebus wasn’t concerned about past experiences in the space.
“ALDI is a completely different kettle of fish,” he said.
“I think people will be excited to hear they are coming to Leeton and will support them.
“They are a multinational corporation and have a lot of experience.
“I think they are a perfect fit for Leeton.
“They are expanding in Wagga, so it’s great they have decided to come to Leeton.”
Mr Donebus was hopeful the news would encourage other businesses to come to Leeton.
“Hopefully it gives everything a bit of a push along,” he said. “Leeton needs some good news and if this can bring other things to town that’s great.”
